Map categories
Earl, you provided a lot of food for thought. To help me get oriented, would you provide a list of map categories you think are needed. I will tweak your list and setup a map category navigation template that can be added to wiki pages. It sounds like you need two flavors of categories: one flavor for the wiki team and one flavor for general users. Enlighten me.

Sorry for for some of my confusion - I am a novice Wiki editor. I don't necessarily need any new categories created, but I am trying to figure out how to best make the maps we have created available to everyone. We have a number of maps each dedicated to a specific topic. For example there is a map showing public shelter locations, another showing evacuation routes, another showing web cams of interest, another showing local news sources. There are links to each of these on the Interactive Maps page. But the Shelters Page should probably also have a link to the shelters map - its just another way of showing the list of shelters. Also this same map should ideally be in the Geography > US > Atlantic Coast South > South Carolina category or on a page in that category. How do we best do that?
I think to start I will create a page for each region (as specified in the categories) and have a subtopic for each state in the region. Then that page can be in the category for each state on that page. But will people find it? If someone finds the South Carolina Shelters page how will they know to go look in the category link for maps? If I had a link on the Shelters page for each state I don't think we will be able to keep up with making sure all the links stay updated.
On the main Interactive Maps page where there is a single link to a map showing public shelters should I just put that page in the shelters category and hope people coming from the shelters category find the link. Or should I make a sub-title on the page for Shelters and put that sub-section in the shelters category. I think I will try the later.
I'm just going to jump and and try some stuff until someone stops me. There are two hurricanes headed toward us and lots to do. We don't have enough time to carefully plan everything.
Thanks for any suggestions or help you can provide.

A good place to start is to create a table of contents page with links for all the map pages. Then I can create a custom template which replicates the table of contents in a compact format, and then all you have to do is insert the template {{MapTOC}} at the bottom or top of each page. Each time the TOC is updated, the template willl need an update. I can show you how to do template updates. The custom template can have page links and category links.

OK. I'll start that next. Thanks for the help.

organizing interactive maps
I have cleaned up the main Interactive Maps page, added a table of contents page, created a separate page for each storm, and created regional maps pages. I have added categories to each page. I am not sure how or if we need the regional pages for maps and I am not sure how the map contents page will be used. I think what we have is usable for now, we need to concentrate on getting more data on the maps with Ike so big and so close. As You flesh out more of the wiki and the home page I will get a better feeling of how everything works and get more ideas for how to organize things. Time for some sleep - it will all make more sense to me tomorrow I am sure... Thanks for your help Jwalling.

I will check out your new TOC Maps Contents Page

I added a {{MapTOC}} template to Maps Contents Page . You can add it to the bottom of any map page. We will need to keep it in sync with your updates.

How is MapTOC working? Do you need any changes?

TOC is fine
I have added one new page, but it is mostly for wiki page editors so I don't think it belongs in the TOC.
The TOC looks nice - I have added it to all the maps pages.

addition to MapsTOC
John, When you run out of things to do you can add the new Interactive Maps - Caribbean page to the MapsTOC template. Maybe we should take out the words "Interactive Maps" on each of the three entries on that line since it is repetitive and the line is getting long. ejmc 16:30, 7 September 2008 (CDT)
