Texas info phone numbers

2 different numbers seem to reoccur for Texas help, info or hurricane lines (2-1-1 & 3-1-1) as well as Austin Hurricane Hotline at 512-974-1110 so I called the Austin 512-974-1110 ph# & operator answered with "3-1-1, may I help you" so I asked her to explain the difference to me and she said that 311 is for Austin/Travis area & 211 is the entire state (& I asked if Austin 512-974-1110 is always patched into 311 & she seemed to agree). she also said that Delco is only shelter she has listed as open (keep in mind that # is only for Austin/Travis). I can't dial/test 211 as I'm out of area. Ruthanne 02:05, 11 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne

Texas chapter Red Cross websites

I visited several websites of "soon to be" affected areas & none had any specific Ike or shelter info so am deleting links from Texas shelter page Ruthanne 02:05, 11 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne

Texas shelter & "other" websites

I visited all websites over the last few days and today & there was very little specific Ike or shelter info. Ruthanne 02:05, 11 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne

format

Hi Earl, I thought I should bring the more specific discussion over here. Since you mentioned on Hurricanes08 that you were working Florida tonight I wanted to say that I notice Florida does not have seperate sections for Gustav, nor does Illinois (Illinois is obviously low priority & only had one shelter). Perhaps we should add seperate hurricane headers in a "reverse, chronilogical order" so format is there for users to fill-in. I'll be happy to do that if you think that's good. I don't know who's continuing on with Ike or currently spearheading shelters or if the "who's working what" is still valid so thinking this discussion page would be a good starting point for shelter page volunteers to post conversation. 163.251.239.2 23:32, 7 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne update: I think I misunderstood Earl's comments and that he is actually working Florida maps & not working Florida shelters therefore I will edit Floriday shelters today. 163.251.239.2 23:38, 7 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne

Florida shelters

Earl, I noticed that the link Current Open Shelters in the Active Shelter List is a repeat of the first Red Cross shelter link (statewide) and that the shelters below there don't have a source or link to news article. I'm not sure if these shelters are copied, new or open, etc. but don't want to edit since you mention you were working Floriday tonight. 163.251.239.2 23:35, 7 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne update: I think I misunderstood Earl's comments and that he is actually working Florida maps & not working Florida shelters therefore I will edit Floriday shelters today. 163.251.239.2 23:38, 7 September 2008 (CDT)ruthanne

master list of emergency info for all states

note: this is "cross-posted on Main Page Discussion page The National List of Pet Friendly Shelters also contains a great list of all 50 states FEMA links, etc. Recommend we copy their links into a future template as well as all the main shelter links from the Gustav shelter page for future wiki.

BUT: for discussion here, I have researched but not found any master shelter lists for the states of Texas & Louisiana (there are many others states on our shelter list that are housing evacuees but are not part of the affected area so am not concerned about those at this time but would like to work on getting a master source for all states and noted on a template for all 50 states if there is no internet master source. This would be a great start for future wikis & the above pet link is a great place to copy all the state "FEMA" links from.

update: just found Louisiana's...buried on a webpage of existing wiki link called"Hurricane 2008 Information Center". I editted the link to go the the actual Hurricane page (since I didn't realize for the last few days that this page's heading was actually a hyperlink to the actual info or pdf's] however this deeper/more appropriate link to the 2008 info just had a couple outdated .pdfs Aug 31Aug29 with minimal static info & no capacity, population, etc.

I'm just surprised that Louisiana & Texas of all states don't have live, extensive, internet-accessible shelter data...I suppose because they are trying to physically funnel evacuees through the check-in points along the evacuation routes. If this is the case I wonder how this affects the wiki content or goals.

I'm thinking we should find the check-in points first and try to find out if the check in points will be the same in all future hurricanes.

I've found the Texas evacuation routes at http://www.state.tx.us/portal/tol/en/emergency/evacuating . I can somewhat guess where the shelters will be from the maps. It is low priority right now, so I will try to make some calls and emails about where future check-in points will be as I get beter information on who to contact. I think I will use one of my Texas maps to mark the evac routes, so I can get a good idea where check-ins might be and where lodging, RV parks, campgrounds, etc are. (Oh, I'm Brad Banner(my real name) on the former gustav ning site at http://hurricanes08.org/ )

I found http://www.tacvbemergency.net/ . It says: "On this site you will find information and resources that can help you to be prepared and to respond quickly. Links to the National Weather Service, FEMA, Texas Emergency Management and other resources can assist you to find help quickly. You can also search for hotel accommodations in case of evacuation. In the Hotel Rooms section, click on Search for Rooms to find hotel availability in cities across the state. " There may be similar sites for other states. Found http://www.towd.com/ which may be helpful. [added]Wow, using http://www.tacvbemergency.net/searchrooms is much better than combing through city CVB sites for available lodging.

Don't assume that every state will have the same organization as Louisiana.

South Carolina has a set # of shelters identified and a master website that will be undated with hours... but they don't have check in spots...

North Carolina leaves it up to each Red Cross chapter to decide how to publicize the shelters they have open and also does not have a check in strategy.

Kentucky has check in, but it is not public... they only open 1 or 2 shelters for non-FEMA (drive yourself) evacuees.
