Heads up! Ike is aiming for the Gulf Coast
Data: Hurricane IKE Location: 21.9 N 68.8 W; Winds: 110 MPH; Movement: WSW @ 16 MPH<

Here are the 2 sites I'm using to track Ike at the moment:

Gustave site & New HurricaneWiki site design

I worked on the Gustav shelter list Monday and did some minor follow-up in the following days. In possible preparation for Ike, I started following the different links, forums, threads, etc. to find that Gustav Wiki has moved to hurricanewiki.org but notice that not only did all the discussion copy over but even new postings to Gustav are pasting over (even the auto-generated Favorites link says "Gustav"). I would like to start editing the new HurricaneWiki to reflect current shelters and conditions but see that my edits are also showing up in the Gustav site. I don't want to delete valuable shelter info from the Gustav wiki that may need to be reposted in the next few days. Is it really intended that both these sites are "one"?

multi-hurricane, multi-disaster wiki

I notice Alabama shelter page has Hannah info on it. It made me think that maybe it is a more fluid, efficient approach to have a wiki cover any, all current hurricane info especially since hurricane season can bring this overlap of hurricane evacuations & sheltering. I am a computer novice so not sure what disadvantages that might have but think it may be a better, all-inclusive approach and easier than "copying" wikis to next hurricane. e-mail list

I think there was an e-mail list for Katrina. I don't see one for Gustav but since we have the e-mail addresses from the "who's doing what" page do folks think it's a good idea to put out notice when/if we have new wiki up for IKE? I have concatenated the e-mails into one list in case we do. Ruthanne 18:48, 7 September 2008 (CDT)Ruthanne

templates

  • i've got access to the templates on KatrinaHelp wiki - please give me a shout on ange.embuldeniya at gmail.com and i'll be most happy to slice them over for you here - seeing that some of the information on the structure at katrina might not be completely apt for Gustav. Cheers!

determining how much wiki is used by customer

During Katrina there was some discussion of determining or measuring Wiki was value or how much its used by end-users (in case of the shelters page the end-user might be the evacuees, overloaded shelters, people seeking evacuee families, agencies placing volunteers). Do we know different ways to determine if it is getting used.....it seems we could count the hits of non-members only or only count members hits once per log in...i notice when I navigate back to a page on the wiki it adds a count... master list of emergency info for all states

The National List of Pet Friendly Shelters also contains a great list of all 50 states FEMA links, etc. Recommend we copy their links into a future template as well as all the main shelter links from the Gustav shelter page for future wiki. Ruthanne 00:54, 3 September 2008 (CDT)Ruthanne

future disaster wiki

I think it would be great to get a blank wiki template together & cleaned up in-between disasters. It would give us time to strealine & improve format, readability, etc. Is this possible? Ruthanne 00:54, 3 September 2008 (CDT)Ruthanne

e-mail notification for start-up of future wiki

I contributed to the Katrina wiki but I didn't realize till late that Gustav was big & heading for the Gulf. Do folks think it's worth sending out an e-mail to previous contributors when a new wiki is formed? Also do the wiki founders have a sense of what magnitude of disaster will warrent a new wiki? I assume in the case of Hurricanes that it would need to be potential Cat 3 or 4 and hitting a mainland and assume we won't do one for Hannah. Ruthanne 00:54, 3 September 2008 (CDT)Ruthanne

Texas Evacuation Routes

Here are the official evac routes for Texas. Might be useful on the front page along with Louisiana's

#gustav channel

Please consider adding channel listing most active re-tweets related to #gustav appearing on Twitter: Possibly in "Related projects"?

FEMA Family Registry and Locator System (NEFRLS)

Please consider adding National Emergency Family Registry and Locator System (NEFRLS) https://asd.fema.gov/inter/nefrls/home.htm http://www.wrecradio.com/cc-common/news/sections/newsarticle.html?feed=185284&article=4174099 This is similar to the Red Cross locator & should be listed in same area. Facebook

Please include these Facebook groups somewhere:

Gulf Coast Hurricane Response is an interdictor-affiliated Facebook group for coordinating donations and volunteers. I'm OK in NOLA is another interdictor-created Facebook group designed to help people communicate that they got out (based on a group sprung up during the VT tragedy)

quickie correction

Under "For Contributors", Katrina Help Wiki:Community Portal should be changed to Hurricane Gustav Wiki:Community Portal. Granted, that page doesn't exist yet, but we oughta make that change for when it does. --ZachPruckowski 16:52, 31 August 2008 (CDT)

How about adding Webcams to the front page?

IRC

You may like to add this link: http://embed.mibbit.com/?server=irc.freenode.net&channel=%23interdictor&noServerNotices=true&noServerMotd=true

That will allow people to join IRC without having to download and install a separate IRC client. That URL is encoded to connect to the correct network and join the #interdictor channel after the user provides a nickname. Kmccoy 19:45, 31 August 2008 (CDT)

Who Is Doing What

The following should be modified on the homepage to link to [[who is doing what]] and call for volunteers: "Sign up to be responsible for editing a page by leaving a note on its Talk page, and preferably in the Ning forum on the latest wiki assignments."

  • A link for Who Is Doing What is now on the Main page lower right panel. --John 18:20, 10 September 2008 (CDT)

add new Ike news page to front page

I created a new Ike 2008 News page to make it easier to see sites about Ike. Maybe this should be in the Traffic Links section of the front page. It might also be good to add the Texas Shelters link to that section to keep all the important Ike stuff together. ejmc 19:53, 12 September 2008 (CDT)
