To Do

Quality Control

Composite maps:

Imagery

  • NOAA has started overflights. JPGs and world files available at http://ngs.woc.noaa.gov/gustav/. The easiest way to work with these is to install mapserver, configure to work with these rasters, and throw TileCache in front. Then this imagery is usable in any web mapping API.

Other Tasks:

  • find KLM or GeoRSS feeds that might be useful to incorporate into one of our maps - add links to GeoRSS data feeds page.

At the appropriate time:

Other Maps:

  • Create a new Google map for a topic not covered and add it to the Interactive Maps Contents page

Team Links

The Interactive Maps team maintains a set of maps - each map represents points of interest for a specific subject (shelters, evacuation routes, local news sources, etc). There is only one Google map for each subject but links to that map will zoom in to an appropriate area for a specific storm. A user can use any map link then scroll or zoom out to see other areas. Anyone can edit any map via any of the links. In some cases a composit map may combine several subject maps onto one map as layers that the user can turn on or off. Interactive

Guidelines for Map Editors

  • ZOOM IN! (The default zoom is far out to let people most easily get to the area they are interested in; the map will be very hard to use unless you first zoom in using the slider on the map).
  • Include identifying information about the location you post storm/flood information, especially when you refer to general areas. Always include the DATE and TIME at the end of the marker text. (i.e. 1 Sept 2008 12:30 CST)
  • Consider what would be most useful for the people looking at your information.
